Bacterial community of reindeer lichens differs between northern and southern lichen woodlands

چکیده

Lichens cover nearly 7% of the earth’s surface and in eastern Canada, lichen woodlands occupy over 300,000 km2. Reindeer lichens (genus Cladonia), are main component they play a crucial role boreal forest ecology. We study, for first time, bacterial community four species reindeer from North America’s forests. Using 16S rRNA gene, we characterize 189 samples. aim to analyse effect host-identity geography composition structure, verify presence common core bacteria identify most abundant taxa. Our results suggest that host-lichen identity does not determine structure lichens, but confirm influence shaping diversity abundance associated Cladonia stellaris. also reveal share reduced composed exclusively by Alphaproteobacteria. Northern exhibit significantly higher stellaris than southern woodlands. The Methylorosula polaris is evident may have particular importance lichens.

Bacterial Community Profile of the Gut Microbiota Differs between Hypercholesterolemic Subjects and Controls

The role of gut microbiota in the development of metabolic illnesses has been abundantly demonstrated. Recent studies suggest that gut microbiota alterations may also be related to the development of hypercholesterolemia. Therefore, we aimed to assess differences in the gut bacterial community profiles between hypercholesterolemic subjects and controls. Thirty cases diagnosed with hypercholeste...

Rumen and Cecum Microbiomes in Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) Are Changed in Response to a Lichen Diet and May Affect Enteric Methane Emissions

Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) are large Holarctic herbivores whose heterogeneous diet has led to the development of a unique gastrointestinal microbiota, essential for the digestion of arctic flora, which may include a large proportion of lichens during winter. Lichens are rich in plant secondary metabolites, which may affect members of the gut microbial consortium, such as the methane-...

Bacterial diversity across individual lichens.

Symbioses are unique habitats for bacteria. We surveyed the spatial diversity of bacterial communities across multiple individuals of closely related lichens using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) and pyrosequencing. Centers of lichens house richer, more consistent assemblages than species-poor and compositionally disparate lichen edges, suggesting that ecological succ...

The Legacy of Logging—Estimating Arboreal Lichen Occurrence in a Boreal Multiple-Use Landscape on a Two Century Scale

In northern Sweden, the availability of arboreal lichens (Bryoria fuscescens, Alectoria sarmentosa) as winter grazing resources is an important element in reindeer husbandry. With the industrialization of forestry, forests rich in arboreal lichens have diminished considerably. Here, we analyze how forestry has impacted lichen availability from the 1920's to the present day and model its future ...

Herbivore grazing—or trampling? Trampling effects by a large ungulate in cold high‐latitude ecosystems

Mammalian herbivores have important top-down effects on ecological processes and landscapes by generating vegetation changes through grazing and trampling. For free-ranging herbivores on large landscapes, trampling is an important ecological factor. However, whereas grazing is widely studied, low-intensity trampling is rarely studied and quantified. The cold-adapted northern tundra reindeer (Ra...
